The purpose of Spanish 130 is to give the Spanish-Speaking students the opportunity to use, practice and improve their language, grammar, reading and writing skills. Emphasis is also placed on the rich and varied Spanish and Latin American Culture.

Student Learning Outcome (SLO): Using critical thinking skills, students will be able to read and analyze paragraphs for their topic sentences and content, as well as write well-constructed paragraphs using planned language (topic sentence, supporting paragraph structure).  Students will be able to answer questions orally using paragraph structure as well.  Furthermore, students will be able to show improvement in their Spanish language structure and usage, including problematic areas such as common spelling errors, standard vs. non-standard Spanish language, use of accent marks, and punctuation, among other topics.

Required textbooks: El mundo 21 hispano- Libro y cuaderno de actividades

 Author: Samaniego- Rojas- Alarcón-

and a good Spanish/English-English/Spanish dictionary.

Students must bring a Spanish/English-English/Spanish dictionary to class every day. Dictionaries should contain a minimum of 80,000 entries.

I recommend: Larousse: Gran Diccionario (Spanish/English-English/Spanish)

and El Pequeño Larousse Ilustrado (Spanish dictionary and encyclopedia)

*******Pagers and cell phones must be turned off during class!!!******

                  Cell phone policy:

Cell phone use during class time is prohibited!  This includes speaking on the phone, listening on the phone, text messaging, and any other form of communication that requires the cell phone to be on.  “Silent,” “manner mode,” “quiet,” and any other silent or low volume settings are not OFF.  Cell phones must be turned OFF.  Note: A ringing phone or students engaging in phone activities will trigger "pop quizzes". Not respecting this rule can lead to being  dropped from this class.
