The purpose of Spanish 201 is to give the student the opportunity to use and practice language and grammar skills, as well as to read short works of literature in Spanish, and to use word comprehension strategies to improve reading and writing skills.. We will also study movies in Spanish and the internet to complement our readings.

Foreign Language Spanish 201 Student Learning Outcome (SLO):

Using critical thinking skills, students will be able to read, discuss and analyze simple journalist and literary works in Spanish. Students will be able to write dialogues, descriptions, letters, reports and summaries as well as simple compositions and essays on various topics using correct grammar, syntax, punctuation, capitalization and diacritical marks. Furthermore, students will be able to speak at the intermediate level commensurate with the grammar and vocabulary of that level, and demonstrate increased knowledge of the Spanish language, literature and culture.

Required Textbook:  Jarvis, Ana C. and Raquel Lebredo. Entre nosotros  (second edition)

Students must bring a Spanish/English-English/Spanish dictionary to class every day. Dictionaries should contain a minimum of 80,000 entries.

I recommend: Larousse: Gran Diccionario (Spanish/English-English/Spanish)

and El Pequeño Larousse Ilustrado (Spanish dictionary and encyclopedia

Aside from the material in the text, we will read additional stories and poems as well as watch films, documentaries, listen to music, etc.

Attendance and Class Participation: 20%

As a great part of the course is communication-based, your attendance is critical. Participation includes your presence in class, your willingness to express and share ideas and to cooperate in any group assigned activities. Excessive absences and consistent tardiness will have a negative effect on your grade.

Quizzes: 20%

There will be two types of quizzes in the class:  grammar quizzes, writing  and reading comprehension quizzes.  The reading comprehension quizzes will consist of brief questionnaires pertaining to the reading assignment we are covering in class. It is partly through these quizzes that I will assess your keeping up with the reading in the class, so please answer questions in complete, specific statements. No late OR makeup quizzes will be given!

Homework and Language Lab (18 hours per semester): 20%

Homework assignments will generally be assigned from the book, or from additional materials provided by the instructor. Timely completion of homework related to the stories we read in class is important as it plays a crucial role in your participation in class.

You are required to complete one hour of lab-work per week outside of class. This requirement will be met by attending the Language Lab. The Language Lab provides many opportunities to complete listening, speaking, reading, and writing exercises.  I will provide you with the specific guidelines as well as hours of availability of the Language Lab.

Exams: 40%

There will be two exams (Midterm: 20% and Final: 20%).

*******Pagers and cell phones must be turned off during class!!!******

                  Cell phone policy:

Cell phone use during class time is prohibited!  This includes speaking on the phone, listening on the phone, text messaging, and any other form of communication that requires the cell phone to be on.  “Silent,” “manner mode,” “quiet,” and any other silent or low volume settings are not OFF.  Cell phones must be turned OFF.  Note: A ringing phone or students engaging in phone activities will trigger "pop quizzes". Not respecting this rule can lead to being  dropped from this class.
